Advice for new skaters?
Show up. Work hard. Push yourself. Fall lots. Laugh harder. Listen to your coach and really focus on all the minute details. Learn about body position, weight distribution, muscle engagement and spring loading/release. Break down skills into smaller, more achievable steps. Once you have tried that... Try something completely different. Shake your head and clear your thoughts. Scramble your brain, pump yourself up, and just go for it. You will amaze yourself by how much confidence can affect your skills. It's amazing what you can achieve if you just believe that you can do it rather than focusing on all the little steps you have to complete in order to accomplish a goal.
Anything else to tell us?
Roller derby is an amazing, fast paced, full contact sport. I love the action, the adrenaline, and the strategy. The hits that send jammers flying, the apex jumps that leave blockers flabbergasted. The thing I love most? The community. Friendships, road trips, camping in back yards, ferry boat rides, hootenannies, snuggle puddles, hand holding, hugs, and love. Just love.
